Wanna Start a Streak?

In 2011, the launch of a new, and soon to be one of the most popular social media platforms in the worls. Snapchat's demographics represent a platform deeply embedded in youth culture. It was originally embraced by teenagers and young adults, but Snapchat's usage has recently expanded to include a broader range of age groups. However, there is still a significant concentration among Gen Z and Millennials. Recently, it's been shown that approximately 78% of internet users between the age of 18 to 24 in the United States are active on Snapchat, making it a super dominant platform for this demographic. The platform promotes a diverse range of users, with a only a slight majority of female users. What I found surprising is that it also tends to navigate towards the higher educated population, and those who have a higher income. Snapchat has an appeal as a platform that thrives on creative expression, communication, and engagement, it is the home of a lot of new trends, and influences conversation among friends.

Originally, snapchat didn't have much to offer that was different from other platforms, but quickly changed and made itself unique. The introduction of Stories in 2013 allowed users to share moments from their day, that disappeared after 24 hours. This feature was became really popular and widely adopted. It became a staple of the platform, inspiring competitors like Instagram and Facebook to implement similar features. Snapchat further diversified itself from other platforms with the introduction of Filters, Lenses, and Geofilters, allowing users to add fun effects, animations, and location-based overlays and effects to their snaps. These features not only enhanced the creative aspect of the platform but also solidified Snapchat's position as a leader in media experiences!

Personally, I wasn't even allowed to have snapchat until I was a sophomore in high school, but once I got it it quickly became a favorite. I love being able to communicate with my friends and talk to them, while seeing their face at the same time! It just feels more personal than sending a text, and it is so unique from any other platform!
